It may not be a Star Wars Land-style actual reality theme park. But we now have a clearer idea of the virtual reality experience one Disney resort plans to offer this December.
Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, a collaboration between Lucasfilm’s ILMxLab and a VR company called The Void, just released its first promotional video — showing how visitors will accompany the Rogue One droid K-2SO on a Rebel mission where they go undercover as Stormtroopers.
As we suspected back in August, the location for this mission is Mustafar — the fiery lava planet where Darth Vader first dueled with Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is also where Rogue One revealed the Dark Lord of the Sith made his home.
Secrets of the Empire will allow you to “walk freely and untethered throughout the multi-sensory experience with friends and family,” The Void announced in a press release. “In groups of four, teams will go undercover as Stormtroopers to capture Imperial intelligence vital to the budding rebellion’s survival.”
The fact that K-2SO is your co-pilot for the mission puts us squarely in pre-New Hope Star Wars territory. And that means there’s a good chance the mission will include an encounter with Vader himself, even though The Void is doing its best to keep that reveal secret.
But thanks to Apple’s WWDC keynote, we already know ILMxLab has been working on VR scenes with Vader on Mustafar — and why would Secrets of the Empire take you to his home planet if you’re not going to meet the big bad guy in person?
Secrets of the Empire will open on December 16 in Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, and Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim on January 5. Tickets, now on sale here, are $30, which by Disneyland standards is practically free.
